Darel “Papa” Cottrell, 73, of Matherville, died on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

Per his wishes there are no services. Bewley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Aledo assisted the family with arrangements. Memorials may be made to Mercer County Relay for Life and sent to the funeral home at 103 SW Third Street, Aledo, IL 61231.

Mr. Cottrell was born July 14, 1936 in Mora, MN., the son of Floyd Broostin and Arlene Drayfahl. He married Betty Lou Tarr on June 2, 1956 in McGrath, MN.

He served in the Army and the National Guard.

He retired as a truck driver for 40 years from Admiral Merchants Motor Freight and CCC. Darel enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betty; children, Tammy Farver, Aledo, Tommy Cottrell, Alaska; grandchildren, Amber (Scott) Wohlwend, Moline, Herbert Darel Farver, Matherville; one great-grandchild lovingly on the way; and siblings, James “Butch“ (Cleo) Cottrell, MN, Robert Cottrell, IA, Jack Cottrell, IA, Jan Cottrell, MN and David (Nancy) Cottrell, MN. He was proceeded in death by his son, Monte; grandparents (both sides) and step-father.
